Remote Measurement of Infant Emotion via Heart Rate Variability
نویسندگان
چکیده
Remote measurement of the blood volume pulse via imaging photoplethysmography (iPPG) using digital cameras and ambient light has great potential for healthcare and affective computing. This study introduces this iPPG method for detecting infant’s emotions pattern (discomfort and neutral) using video frames obtained from a low-cost webcam. Ten infants were obtained for heart rate(HR) and heart rate variability(HRV) measurements under neutral and discomfortable emotions. Experimental results show that the physiological parameters (HR & HRV) derived from the remote iPPG datasets yield statistically comparable results to those acquired using a contact PPG sensor, the gold standard. This study offers further support for the applicability of infant’s emotions detection by remote and low-cost means, providing an alternative to conventional contact techniques. Our study expect that the proposed method could be used in a robotics baby caregiver that can help take care of infants. Based on psychophysiological research, coherent heart-brain interaction can change afferent cardiac signal pattern sent to the brain. Accordingly, the present study aimed at facilitating the emotion-cognition interaction through HeartMath Institute self-regulated emotional techniques to investigate the efficacy of heart-brain coherence on reading anxiety reduction that significantly enhances at...

OBJECTIVE To examine the effect of kangaroo care on heart rate variability in a healthy preterm infant. DESIGN Case study. SETTING Private room on a postpartum unit. PARTICIPANT A mother-preterm infant dyad. INTERVENTION Kangaroo (skin-to-skin) care. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Heart rate variability, a noninvasive measurement of the sympathetic and parasympathetic components of the autonomi...

Abstract Many studies have been conducted on heart rate variability. Variability in the heart signal of two sequential beats is called heart rate variability (HRV). Short- and long- term variability reflects autonomic nervous system function, so that increased or decreased heart rate variability (HRV) is an indicator of human health. So, the analysis of these changes can predict sudden death...
متن کاملThe impact of heart rate variability on subjective well-being is mediated by emotion regulation
Resting heart rate variability (HRV) can serve as an index of self-regulatory strength. In the present study we tested the hypotheses that HRV, indexing adaptive self-regulation, is associated with subjective wellbeing, and that this association is mediated by the habitual use of strategies of emotion regulation that involve executive functions. In addition to measuring heart rate at rest, subj...
